Latvia is a country on the Baltic Sea, neighboured by Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus and Russia. It became a country in its own right following the dissolution of the Russian Empire on 18th November 1918. This was followed by the joining of the USSR in 1940. It was occupied by Germany from 1941 to 1944, and became an independent free state in 1991.
