The Republic of Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Indonesia comprises 17,508 islands. With a population of around 230 million people, it is the world's fourth most populous country, and has the world's largest population of Muslims. Indonesia is a republic, with an elected legislature and president. The capital city is Jakarta. The country shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Malaysia. Other neighboring countries include Singapore, Philippines, Australia, and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

According to a census conducted in 2007 on 2000 people 86.1% were Muslims, 5.7% Protestant, 3% are Catholic, 1.8% Hindu, 3.4% Buddhist and other or unspecified.

The population at the time was estimated at around 234,693,998, though that is a very specific estimate

In Indonesia a person is free to practice any religion that they choose, although the government only recognizes six religions Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism. The Indonesian Constitution states that every person shall be free to choose and to practice the religion of his/her choice" and "guarantees all persons the freedom of worship, each according to his/her own religion or belief".

Indonesia has the most extensive rainforest in all of Asia; it is home to many rare and unusual species of animal from Orangutans to Sumatran Tigers. The rainforest is presently being destroyed in search of palm oil; this is edible plant oil but can be found in many beauty products in the western world and can also be used as a bio-fuel for cars. Environmental groups have called this a “climate bomb” because of the forest is being destroyed at such a rate.

EconomyEdit

Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and a member of the G-20 major economies. Indonesia's estimated gross domestic product (nominal) for 2008 was US$511.7 billion with estimated nominal per capita GDP was US$2,246, and per capita GDP PPP was US$3,979 (international dollars).The services sector is the economy's largest and accounts for 45.3% of GDP (2005). This is followed by industry (40.7%) and agriculture (14.0%).However, agriculture employs more people than other sectors, accounting for 44.3% of the 95 million-strong workforce. This is followed by the services sector (36.9%) and industry (18.8%).Major industries include petroleum and natural gas, textiles, apparel, and mining. Major agricultural products include palm oil, rice, tea, coffee, spices, and rubber.
